Representatives of government of Botswana’s agriculture and energy portfolios (insert) descended into Habu on 3rd March 2022 to conduct a rapid community appraisal of energy and productive water needs. It was hoped that the feedback would inform design, supply, installation and commissioning of solar powered irrigation and water supply system as envisaged in the “Improvement of Livelihoods in the SADC Member States through the Adoption of Distributed Renewable Energy for Productive Use” project.

Implemented by the SADC Secretariat in partnership with SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), Centre for Coordination of Agricultural Research and Development for Southern Africa (CARDESSA) and the Global Water Partnership Southern Africa (GWP SA), the pilot project covers Angola, Botswana, Malawi, Namibia, and Zambia.

The appraisal revealed community support for development of Habu Trust’s vegetable garden. Asked to summarize the emerging project brief, Mr James Mulenga of the Department of Energy Affairs said that the project shall entail drilling and equipping a solar powered borehole to irrigate 2 hectares of farmland under shade netting. As such, the initiative will go a long way towards augmenting CO-EX’s Village Greens project currently supported by Xigera Safari Lodge.

SWM PROJECT HANDS OVER 2 LAND CRUISERS TO EXPEDITE IMPLEMENTATION https://communitycoexistence.org/swm-project-hands-over-2-land-cruisers-to-expedite-implementation/ https://communitycoexistence.org/swm-project-hands-over-2-land-cruisers-to-expedite-implementation/#respond Mon, 18 Jul 2022 04:42:00 +0000 https://communitycoexistence.org/?p=932

Establishing and maintaining a community wildlife conservancy is hard work. An expansive road network reaching even the nethermost parts of the area, must be created not only to unlock tourism potential but also as a means of enabling wildlife scouts to patrol and guard the area against poachers day and night.

Meetings with stakeholders at regional and local levels must be attended in order to discuss and dispense off with administrative and other institutional arrangements germane to management of the conservancy. Traversing implied geographic distances requires vehicles suited to the terrain. To this end, CO-EX received brand new Toyota Landcruisers (x2) and an off road/scrambler motorbicycle from FAO (insert) at the beginning of the year (2022).

A quadbike, horses and donkeys are also soon to be acquired. Following handover of the vehicles to WEA CO-Director, Dr John McNutt, FAO Field Coordinator Ms Manon Mispiratceguy said that she was happy that the vehicles had finally been handed over and that they will be key in expediting the work of the SWM project.

BRAND NEW HABU BAITS OFFICERS GO FOR TRAINING https://communitycoexistence.org/brand-new-habu-baits-officers-go-for-training/ https://communitycoexistence.org/brand-new-habu-baits-officers-go-for-training/#respond Wed, 23 Feb 2022 05:18:00 +0000 https://communitycoexistence.org/?p=1378

Wild Entrust’s newly hired BAITS officers Mr Kerapetse Kalafo and Mr Kelweefe Xubere joined with their counterparts from CLAWS (Eretsha) for induction training in Maun on 21st February 2022. Organized by the Department of Veterinary Services, the four days long training introduced the quintet to Botswana’s Animal Identification and Tracking System (BAITS), its online log-in credentials and how to navigate all interphases. The specific responsibility of the duo will be to establish and maintain a BAITS database for all livestock farmers in the Habu area.

BAITS is a critical compliance requirement in the country’s new and improved beef value chain including within the Commodity Based Trade (CBT) of beef currently being demonstrated by CO-EX in Habu. The system essentially entails the ear tagging of animals within three months of birth. Both an electronic ear tag which contains a Radio Frequency Identification Device (RFID) and an analogue ear tag are used.

Cattle tagging involves the farmer buying the combo tags (digital and analogue), tagging his animals and submitting data to BAITS Officers who then populate the online database. Before the hiring of our two BAITS Officers, farmers in Habu were compelled to commute 80km to purchase ear tags as well as submit their animal information in Gumare.

Enroute to establishing their home base camp, CO-EX staff taking a large Leopard Tortoise out of harm’s way enroute to setting up their main living quarters within Habu village’s designated community wildlife conservancy. Once established, the conservancy will be the first of its kind in Botswana and along with our pro-poor efforts to develop Habu’s beef value chain are expected to result in community wildlife co-existence and resilience.

The projects are supported by @fao; @conservation international; @EU; @ AFD
